Why is the website aimed at black women?
Obesity is major health concern for the general population in the UK, but recent surveys have shown that black women in the UK are at a greater risk of being overweight or obese. The Health Survey for England; health of ethnic minority groups in 2004 revealed that 66% of African-Caribbean women are overweight or obese, compared with 54% of the general population. In contrast, black men from both Africa and the Caribbean have lower rates of overweight and obesity than the general population. Not surprisingly, rates of type 2 diabetes and heart disease are significantly higher than for black women, compared with women in general population.

Why are more black women overweight?
It is unclear why black women have such an increased risk of overweight and obesity. Some scientists believe that this difference is because black women use energy more efficiently (have a slower metabolism) while others believe that there are differences in diet and the amount of physical activity. Whatever the cause, it is clear that black women in the UK are particularly at risk of developing weight related health problems such as high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.

How do you know that this will be relevant to black women?
A key feature of the project is the involvement black women from both Africa and the Caribbean. Black women from different communities were invited to contribute ideas and discuss issues around weight, physical activity and health as well as give their views on the current Shape-Up programme. To ensure we got a range of views we recruiting women from local community centres, people working for the government and corporate organisations. We also spoke to health professional working in black communities and black health professionals such as dietitians, health care assistants, community workers and physical activity specialist.
